What is recurrent sinusitis?

Recurrent sinusitis is also known as Recurrent Acute Rhinosinusitis. This condition is quite similar to chronic sinusitis. It has the same signs and symptoms as any other sinus infection, but it can happen several times a year and last up to a month each time. Various illnesses, such as recurrent rhinitis, allergic rhinitis, smoke inhalation, and others, can cause this condition to fare up. In this condition, the infection shrinks the size of the sinus openings and obstructs the flow of air and mucus through them.

The sinuses have numerous purposes other than only keeping the skull light. The paranasal area of the body, below the maxillary bone, is where sinusitis most frequently affects the maxillary sinuses. By keeping the nasal passages wet, these liquids stop viruses and bacteria from entering.

Recurrent Acute Rhinosinusitis (RARS) can occur due to the following:

  • Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, other Streptococcus species, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Staphylococcus aureus are typical bacterial infections that can cause RARS.
  • Post-operative hospital infection (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
  • Aspergillus fumigatus can cause fungal RARS infections. Anatomical and environmental variables are other etiological factors.

What is the treatment of recurrent sinusitis?

Generally, doctors initiate the treatment with medications.  When medicines fail to offer relief, doctors move to surgical treatment. The treatment options for recurrent sinusitis are as follows:

  1. Lifestyle changes: You may have to alter your lifestyle to avoid getting in contact with the allergens that can trigger your sinusitis. For instance, you may have to quit smoking as it is a leading cause of recurrent sinusitis.
  2. Nasal saline sprays: Recurrent sinusitis can cause some inflammation.

Nasal saline sprays can help reduce the impact of inflammation and swelling caused by allergens.

  1. Antibiotics: Your doctor may prescribe some antibiotics as a first-line treatment based on your infection.
  2. Surgical treatments: Surgery is the last option when conservative methods fail to solve the problem. Some surgical solutions are mentioned below to treat recurrent sinusitis:
  • Balloon sinuplasty: This is a minimally invasive daycare procedure in which the surgeon sedates the nasal area and inserts a balloon into the sinus. Next, they slowly inflate the balloon, unblock the sinus, and clear the passageways.

FESS (Functional endoscopic sinus surgery): This is another, minimally invasive procedure to treat serious sinus conditions. In this method, the surgeon removes the infected tissue, bone, or nasal polyps that are causing a blockage in your sinus. Then, they pack your nose gently with cotton to absorb the discharge or blood.

How to prepare for recurrent sinusitis treatment?

Your surgeon or medical coordinator may give you some tips to be prepared for your surgery. Here we have outlined some suggestions that might help you prepare for your surgery and recover without complications:

  • Avoid using any NSAIDs, sometimes referred to as anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, warfarin, aspirin, etc. These medications may raise the possibility of heavy bleeding during the procedure.
  • Do not eat anything for at least 8 hours before surgery to avoid anesthesia-related complications.
  • Take all of the prescription medicines as directed by the doctor.
  • Avoid using herbal supplements, including ginseng and ginger.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol and smoking.
  • Make sure the ENT surgeon is aware about your medical background, including any genetically inherited problems, allergies, blood disorders, etc.
  • Make sure  you bring an attendant with you.
  • Make sure you have all the documents including identify proof, insurance documentation with you during surgery.

How to recover after recurrent sinusitis treatment?

If you have received recurrent sinusitis treatment, here are some preventive guidelines for you to help you recover safely:

  • Avoid contacting an infected person.
  • If you live in a dry area, then use an air humidifier to keep the air moist around you.
  • Avoid smoking as it can cause difficulty in the recovery process.
  • Eat soft and chewable food items, like boiled vegetables, boiled eggs, mashed potatoes, etc.
  • Drink plenty of warm fluids like ginger, honey tea, soup, etc.
  • Take medicines on time as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Don’t take over-the-counter medicines without a doctor’s recommendation.

Risks and complications associated with recurrent sinusitis treatment

As with any surgery, there are some risks and complications associated with sinusitis surgery, including:

Excessive bleeding: Minor bleeding during surgery is expected and nothing to be worried about.

Your surgeon may have to pause the surgery for a short period of time if excessive bleeding occurs.

Infection: There is a risk of infection from medical equipment or other sources. To reduce the risk, your surgeon will recommend antibiotics immediately following surgery.

Cerebrospinal fluid leak: During the procedure, the surgeon works on the ethmoid bone. CSF leakage can occur if the bone becomes injured. This is a very uncommon complication of the surgery.

Effect on the eyes: Because the sinus is close to the eyes, there is a risk of eye injury during the procedure.

Other risks include changes in your sense of smell.
