What is Turbinoplasty?
Turbinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is used to reduce or reshape the size of turbinates that have become infected or swollen. Turbinates are soft, bony structures that line both sides of the nasal passage. The mucosa is the soft tissue that covers them.
Turbinoplasty can be performed through a variety of methods , such as electrocautery, coblation, or radiofrequency ablation. These methods reduce the size of the turbinates, instead of removing them.
When is Turbinoplasty Treatment Required?
Turbinoplasty is a procedure that removes or reduces turbinates to clear nasal passageways.Â
Patients with the conditions listed below who have not responded to other treatments can have this surgery.
- Turbinates become inflamed, swollen, or infected, resulting in nasal obstructions.
- Turbinates are too bulky and cause nasal passage blockage.
- Lying down exacerbates nasal congestion.
- Septum deviation
- Vasomotor rhinitis is characterized by a continuous discharge of clear fluid from the nose.
- On the side of lying, nasal congestion becomes worse.
Factors Affecting the Turbinoplasty Treatment Cost
There are several factors that affect the final cost of turbinoplasty in India, including:
- The severity of the condition: The final cost of treatment is determined by the severity of a patient’s condition. If the patient has had turbinoplasty for more than 4 to 5 weeks and medications are not working, further treatment may be required which can inflate the treatment cost.
- Choice of hospital: Hospital charges are based on the amenities and facilities provided for every treatment. Hospitals in major cities are significantly more expensive than hospitals in smaller towns. Furthermore, private hospitals charge more than government hospitals.
- Surgeon’s experience: A more experienced surgeon usually charges more than a less experienced one, which affects the overall cost of treatment.
- Additional costs due to complications: If complications arise, the surgeon may be forced to extend the procedure, raising the overall cost.
- Type of treatment: The type of treatment you receive- medical or surgical can also bring a difference in the cost.
Cost of diagnostic tests
To determine the severity of the patient’s condition, the surgeon may order diagnostic tests. These tests can also raise the overall cost of treatment.
The following are the costs of some diagnostic tests performed prior to turbinoplasty:
X-ray: Rs. 250- Rs. 500
Imaging tests: Rs. 1500 – Rs. 4000
Swab test/tissue culture: Rs. 400- Rs. 1000
Nasal Endoscopy: Rs. 1500 – Rs 2000
Does Medical Insurance Cover the Cost of Turbinoplasty?
Yes. Most nasal surgeries, apart from cosmetic surgeries are covered by insurance, including deviated septum surgery, turbinoplasty, septoplasty, sinus surgery for recurrent acute or chronic sinusitis, nasal valve stenosis, and nasal fracture surgery.
You can inquire directly with your insurance company about your treatment coverage. We can assist you in filing your insurance claim and freeing up your time to prepare for your surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is turbinoplasty a major surgery?
A turbinoplasty is a minimally invasive daycare procedure that is performed under local or general anesthesia. It usually takes around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may feel slight discomfort or pain after the procedure, but it will fully subside within one week.
What happens if the turbinates become too big?
They may block airflow if they are swollen and become too big. This condition is known as turbinate hypertrophy. It can cause bleeding, recurrent infections, nose bleeding, etc.Â
Is turbinates bone or cartilage?
Four bony plates are on either side of the nasal cavity called nasal conchae (or turbinates for short).
What causes turbinates to swell at night?
In response to changes in blood flow, the mucous membrane covering the turbinates can shrink or swell. Blood flow changes can lead to swelling of the turbinates when lying down, eating certain foods, experiencing allergies, taking medications, taking hormones, or catching an infection.
Can turbinates make you snore?
Nasal congestion and enlarged turbinates can cause headaches, and sleep disorders, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, since the nasal airway, which is the regular route for breathing during sleep, becomes obstructed.
What is the expected duration of the stuffy nose after the turbinate reduction procedure?
It is possible to experience temporary nasal congestion and skin swelling after surgery for approximately seven to ten days. It depends on the type of surgery and the extent of the recovery, but following your physician’s post-op instructions will help make the recovery process go more quickly.
