The following are the exclusions for bariatric surgeries under health insurance:
In some cases, health insurance does not include bariatric surgery if it is for a pre-existing medical condition.
If an insurance plan includes pre-existing medical conditions, these conditions may be included only after a waiting period of around 2 to 4 years.
If bariatric surgery is being performed for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons, it may not be covered under the health insurance plan.
In addition, if the weight gain is because of medication or poor mental health, bariatric surgery for the same may not be covered under the insurance plan.

What Is The Difference Between Mediclaim and Health insurance?
Mediclaim and health insurance are two terms that people use interchangeably, but these two are very different from each other. A health insurance policy is a more comprehensive insurance policy whereas mediclaim is a more restricted one. A health insurance plan includes medical expenses in the pre and post-hospitalization period along with the surgery costs. Whereas, mediclaim insurance covers only hospitalization expenses related to the surgery.
Also, a health insurance plan provides the benefit of add-ons like critical illness coverage, loss of income, etc which increases the coverage, but mediclaim insurance does not provide any add-on cover. Furthermore, to claim a mediclaim policy, the insured person should be hospitalized otherwise they won’t be able to get the claim. But, there is no such requirement if you are using a health insurance policy to undergo bariatric surgery.
