Hetrazan 100 is a medication that is used for the treatment of worm infections and filariasis.

Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is a disease caused by Wuchereria Bancrofti, Brugia Malayi, and Brugia Timori. 

Men suffering from lymphatic filariasis can also experience swelling in their scrotum. The swelling of the scrotum is called a hydrocele. Hydrocele can be an extremely painful and discomforting condition and can hinder the normal routine life of the person.

Hetrazan 100 is a commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of hydroceles, especially in the cases when the underlying cause of hydroceles is filariasis.

Hetrazan 100 is an anti-helminthic. Anti-helminthics are the drugs that work against worms and parasites. These expel the parasites from the body by either stunning them or killing them without causing any adverse effects to the host body.

Uses of Hetrazan 100 

Hetrazan 100 is effective against both the larval and adult forms of parasitic worms. Some of the major conditions for which the drug is prescribed are listed below:

  • Lymphatic filariasis: Lymphatic filariasis can lead to swelling in the arms, legs, and genitals. It can also lead to the condition of hydroceles. Hetrazan 100 is an effective medication for this condition and provides relief from the associated symptoms.

  • Loiasis: Loiasis is an infection caused by a worm known as Loa loa. Loiasis is transmitted through the bites of deer flies or mango flies. It affects the eyes. Hetrazan 100 is used for the treatment of Loiasis. 
  • Toxocariasis: Toxocariasis is yet another worm infection that can cause rheumatic, neurologic or asthma-related symptoms. Hetrazan 100 is used as a preventive as well as treatment medicine for this condition. 
  • Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia: The major symptoms of this condition include persistent cough, weakness, mild fever and an enlarged spleen. Hetrazan 100 is the primary treatment medication for this condition.

Note: Hetrazan 100 is not effective against pinworms and tapeworms.

How does Hetrazan 100 work for hydrocele?

As explained above, Hetrazan 100 is an anti-helminthic. It expels the parasites and worms out of the body either by stunning them or killing them. In this process of killing the parasite, there are no adverse effects on the body of the host. That means, patients of hydrocele usually do not face any complications with this medicine.

In the case of hydroceles that filariasis causes, Hetrazan works by killing the underlying worms and parasites. Diethylcarbamazine also inhibits the growth of worms. Thus, Hetrazan 100 is very effective in providing relief from the pain and swelling that hydroceles cause.

Composition of Hetrazan 100

The main constituent salt of Hetrazan 100 is Diethylcarbamazine. Hetrazan 100 is an anti-helminthic. Anti-helminthics are the drugs that work against worms and parasites.

Hetrazan is usually available in the form of tablets only.

Dosage of Hetrazan 100 For Hydrocele (hydrocele caused by lymphatic filariasis)

Hetrazan 100 can be taken orally in the form of tablets. For hydroceles, the doctor advises the average dosage of 3 tablets a day for about 15-21 days. You should take the tablet as a whole. Do not crush or chew the tablet. Also, remember to take the medicine along with food.

The dosage can vary depending upon the following factors:

  • The severity of the condition
  • Patient’s age
  • Bodyweight

The dosage for children under the age of 10 years should be half of the dosage for adults.

Note: This medicine is not advisable for children under the age of 2 years. So, if your infant is suffering from hydrocele, consult a specialist doctor for the best suited-treatment.

Overdose/Skipped Dosage of Hetrazan 100:

If you skipped a dose, take it immediately. However, if your next dose is in less than 4 hours, skip the missed dosage.

Common symptoms of an overdose of Hetrazan 100 include nausea, vomiting, vertigo, etc. Seek emergency medical attention in case of an overdose.

Interaction of Hetrazan 100 tablet

Hetrazan is an allopathic drug. This means that there is a high probability of it interacting with other medicines that you may be taking.

If Hetrazan 100 interacts with other medicines, it can have adverse effects. It can worsen the condition and have serious side effects. Therefore, it is advisable to tell your doctor about any medications that you are on beforehand only.

Some of the medicines that should not be taken with Hetrazan 100 are

  • Chloroquine
  • Quinine
  • Mefloquine

Warnings of Hetrazan 100

You should not take Hetrazan 100 without proper consultation with a doctor.

The following conditions should be discussed with the doctor before taking the medicine.

  • If you have any cardiac diseases
  •  You have any history of convulsions
  • If you have hereditary galactose intolerance
  • When you are already suffering from any kidney problems
  • If you have Lapp lactase deficiency

Also, Hetrazan 100 is not good in case you have any allergies to Diethycarbamazine or if you have Onchocerciasis (River Blindness). Hetrazan 100 in these cases can have severe side effects.

Side-Effects of Hetrazan 100

Along with the needed effects, Hetrazan 100 can have some side effects as well. Some of these are mild while some others can be severe.

The mild and common side effects of Hetrazan 100 include

  • Headache
  • Joint Pain
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

The mild side effects go away with time. However, in some cases, serious side effects may also surface. These include fever, swelling, and itching of face and eyes, skin rashes, etc. These require immediate medical attention.

There are certain other medicines also that have the same composition as that of Hetrazan 100. These can be taken in case Hetrazan 100 is not available.

Hetrazan 100 can be a very effective medicine for providing relief from the symptoms of hydroceles. These are even more effective in the treatment of hydroceles due to filariasis. 

Although Hetrazan is usually very successful in mild cases, it may not provide relief in some cases. The doctor may prescribe some alternative medications and may also run some tests.
