A Brief about Urology
The branch of medicine that aims at surgical and medical disorders of the male and female urinary system and the male reproductive organs is termed as Urology. Organs under the province of urology are kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, adrenal glands and the male reproductive organs (penis, prostate, testicles).
The development of laser technology has facilitated doctors to treat a number of disorders through laser-assisted surgeries. It has tremendously helped urologists to analyze small details of the urinary tract with great precision using endoscopic instruments. As a result of which complex cases are now being treated with ease.
How Laser Technique benefits Urology?
There are many urological treatments that have been made easy with laser surgeries. A few ways in which laser technique facilitates urologists to treat urinary system disorders are as below: -
- Laser for bladder outlet obstruction: Bladder outlet obstruction is a urinary tract disorder in which blockage in the bladder hinders the flow of urine to the urethra. This leads to discomfort to the patient. This blockage may occur in younger males as well as men in their old age due to the narrowing of the bladder neck. As compared to open surgery, laser treatment helps in removing this blockage with lesser loss of blood. Early discharge from the hospital.
- Laser in urolithiasis: The emergence of kidney stones in the urinary system is known as urolithiasis. Treatment of which is possible with surgery. With the coming of laser technology, the stones can be broken into pieces helping them easily flush out through the urinary tract. This is done with the help of endoscopic intracorporeal laser lithotripsy. The strong point is; laser technology is very safe and easy access the difficult locations.
- Laser for benign prostatic hyperplasia: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) refers to the enlargement of the prostate(a male reproductive organ). This condition can lead to discomfort with a recurrent urge to urinate, problems in urination or loss of bladder control. It may be a factor leading to UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and stones. This issue can be resolved using laser energy that melts away the excess prostate tissues restoring it to original size.
- Laser for bladder cancer and urinary tract strictures: Abnormal growth of cells in the urinary tract leads to bladder cancer. This cancer develops in the form of tumors. Transurethral bladder tumor resection (TURBT) is the laser technology used for diagnosis, staging, and for the treatment of malignant tumors. And, in urinary tract strictures, the flow of urine stops as the urethra becomes narrow due to infection or injury. Laser technology helps to remove the stricture or make it evaporate.
Laser Technology has proved to be an efficient way of treating the urological disorder, also helping patients with a smooth surgery.
