Diagnosis

The doctor will ask about the medical and surgical history of the patient as well as any active medications that the patient may be taking. In addition, he can ask for certain tests. They are listed below:

  • Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) series
  • Computed Tomography (CT) scan
  • Intestinal endoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Upper GI Endoscopy and Enteroscopy
  • Capsule endoscopy

Procedure

The following surgeries are performed to cure this disease:-

  • Subtotal Colectomy: This is also called as large bowel resection and is done to cure the intestinal obstruction, fistula, or severe Crohn’s disease in your large intestine.
  • Ileostomy: In this, a stoma or an opening in the abdomen is created and an artificial removable external collection pouch, called an ostomy pouch/ ostomy appliance is connected with the stoma. Stoma will collect the stool, not the anus. Patients going through the proctocolectomy will have to carry a stoma for the rest of their life.
  • Small Bowel Resection: It is done to recover the intestinal obstruction or severe Crohn’s disease in your small intestine.Small bowel resection is done by Laparoscopic Surgery which is a minimally invasive surgery that does not require a large incision
