Advanced Treatment for 25 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are mineral deposits found in the urinary system. They are formed when there are more crystal-forming substances, such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid, etc., than the fluid in your urine can dilute. They can be prevented by following a healthy diet and lifestyle. Most kidney stones are small, and stones smaller than 5 mm are usually asymptomatic and pass on their own. However, large stones can lead to severe pain, urinary problems, urinary tract infections, etc. Generally, stones larger than 5 mm in size need medical treatment, and stones larger than 20 mm are usually treated surgically. If you have kidney stones larger than 25 mm in size, you can book an appointment with expert urologists at Pristyn Care for long-term effective treatment.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosi

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove a kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which treatment is best for a 25 mm kidney stone removal?

The exact course of treatment depends on the patient’s symptoms, preference, diagnostic test results, etc. Normally, ESWL is preferred as it is completely non-invasive, but for large stones that can’t be dissolved, other treatments like staged URSL or PCNL are considered.

Are 25 mm kidney stones painful?

Yes, kidney stones can lead to severe pain in the back or side. Normally, only small kidney stones smaller than 5 mm in size are asymptomatic. Kidney stones above 6-8 mm in size can block the urinary passage and lead to other urinary issues.

What is the cost of kidney stone surgery for 25 mm kidney stones?

The cost of 25 mm kidney stone treatment at Pristyn Care ranges from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1,05,000, depending on the type of treatment, patient’s health condition, the surgeon’s fees, hospitalization cost, etc.

Can a 25 mm kidney stone cause permanent damage to the kidneys?

Kidney stones normally do not cause any kidney damage if they are treated in time, however, a 25 mm kidney stone is large enough to block the urinary passage and cause severe distress to the patient if not treated in time.

Is kidney stone surgery painful?

All kidney stone treatments are performed under anesthesia, so they are not painful. The patient may have a little pain and discomfort after the surgery, but it is easily manageable through over-the-counter medications and proper rest.
