Advanced Treatment for 30 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are small hard deposits made from minerals and salt in the kidneys. They are also known as renal calculi, nephrolithiasis, or urolithiasis. Although they form in the kidneys, they can travel from the kidneys to other parts of the urinary system and cause damage there. The treatment for kidney stones depends on their size, location, composition, etc. Small stones can be treated medically and do not need surgical intervention, but large kidney stones need to be treated promptly to avoid permanent damage to the kidneys. Generally, stones above 6 mm are considered large and need medical attention. A 30 mm kidney stone can block the urine flow completely and needs to be treated immediately.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove a kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which treatment is best for a 30 mm kidney stone removal?

A 30 mm kidney stone is fairly large and can cause serious blockage in the urine flow. The exact course of treatment will be decided by the urologist based on the patient’s symptoms, preference, diagnostic test results, etc., staged URSL is generally considered to be the best treatment option for stones larger than 20 mm in size.

Can a 30 mm kidney stone be asymptomatic?

Around 45% of kidney stones are asymptomatic, especially if they are small. However, kidney stones above 6-8 mm in size are rarely asymptomatic. A 30 mm kidney stone is large enough to block the urine flow completely and thus won’t be asymptomatic.

What is the cost of kidney stone surgery for 30 mm kidney stones?

The cost of a 30 mm kidney stone treatment at Pristyn Care ranges from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1,05,000.  It depends on a variety of factors like the choice of treatment, number, and location of the stones, patient’s general health condition, etc.

Can a 30 mm kidney stone cause permanent damage to the kidneys?

Normally, kidney stones do not cause permanent damage to the kidneys if they are treated properly in time. However, if not treated in time, large kidney stones can result in urinary incontinence, persistent urinary infections, etc., resulting in permanent damage over time.

Can a 30 mm kidney stone be dissolved through medicines?

No, medical management is usually only performed for kidney stones that are 5 mm or smaller in size. A 30 mm kidney stone is too small to be treated medically and needs surgical treatment for long-term relief.
