Advanced Treatment for 6 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are hard masses that can form in the kidney due to accumulation of excess salts and minerals. When the stones are smaller than 4 or 5 mm, they often get flushed out on their own. But if a stone is 6 mm in size, it will not be able to move through the ureter easily. It can get stuck and cause extreme pain if you don’t seek an expert’s help. If you have been diagnosed with kidney stones and you are looking for urology specialists, contact Pristyn Care. We’ll schedule a free consultation with the doctor so that you can discuss your treatment options.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 6 mm kidney stone big?

Yes, a kidney stone of 6 mm size is considered big. The ureter can expand up to 5 mm only. Thus, stones larger than 5 mm are considered large/big. A stone of this size won’t pass through the urinary tract without causing pain.

Can a 6 mm kidney stone dissolve on its own?

No, a kidney stone of 6 mm size or any size rarely dissolves on its own. Typically, medications are prescribed to dissolve the stone so that it can pass through the urinary tract without causing any pain.

Will I need surgery to get rid of a 6 mm kidney stone?

No, surgery is rarely the first choice for the removal of a 6 mm kidney stone. A kidney stone of 6 mm only requires surgical treatment if it gets stuck in the ureter and causes infections or kidney damage.

What are the treatment options for a 6 mm kidney stone?

Kidney stones that are 6 mm or larger need to be broken down into smaller pieces. Thus, the treatment options are medications, shockwave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, retrograde intrarenal surgery, and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The urologist chooses the most suitable treatment according to the severity of the condition.

Does it hurt to pass a 6 mm kidney stone?

Yes, it will hurt to pass a 6 mm kidney stone as the ureter will have to expand beyond its limit. This will cause extreme pain. Thus, the doctor will prescribe you some medications that will dissolve the stones and make them smaller fragments so that they can easily pass through the urinary tract and exit the body.

What can help to pass a 6 mm kidney stone easily?

The doctor will give you medications that will help to dissolve the stones so that they can pass through the urinary tract. To flush them out easily, follow the tips below-

  • Drink plenty of water, at least 3 liters a day, to flush out the stones.
  • Take prescribed pain medications to prevent agonizing pain while passing the stone.
  • Ask the doctor to give you an alpha-blocker to relax the ureter.
  • Avoid eating foods that have high oxalate levels, such as beets, potatoes, nuts, animal protein, etc.
  • Drink juices, such as lemon juice, orange juice, cranberry juice, etc., as they can regulate the uric acid levels and also help to break the calcium deposits.

If these tips are not helpful and you develop urinary tract infections (UTIs), experience severe pain, have blood in the urine, etc., see a urologist immediately.
