Advanced Treatment for 7.5 mm Kidney Stone

A kidney stone is a hard deposit that forms due to excess levels of minerals and salts in the urine. Sometimes, these minerals and salts crystallize and lead to the formation of stones in the kidney. They start small but grow bigger over time. Once the stone size becomes larger than 4 mm, they start exhibiting symptoms. Kidney stones smaller than 5 mm can be passed naturally, but if they grow up to 7.5 mm in size, they become more problematic. There are significant chances that the stone will get stuck in the urinary tract. So, make sure you do not delay kidney stone treatment and see a kidney stone specialist immediately. You can contact Pristyn Care and book a free consultation with our urology experts to discuss your treatment options for kidney stones.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to pass a 7.5 mm kidney stone through urine?

No, it is not possible to pass a 7.5 mm kidney stone naturally. When a stone is this big, it must be broken down into smaller pieces so that they can be flushed out.

Does a 7.5 mm kidney stone require surgery?

Generally, a 7.5 mm kidney stone can be dissolved and broken down into pieces. However, if the stone gets stuck in the ureter, it may cause severe pain and increase the risk of developing kidney infections, UTIs, etc.

What is the best method to remove a 7.5 mm kidney stone?

The most common and effective method for removal of a 7.5 mm kidney stone is shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy. High-energy shock waves are used in this to break the stones so that the body can expel them.

Does it hurt to pass kidney stones?

Sometimes, passing a kidney stone can hurt, especially if multiple stones larger than 4 mm are present. Big stones force the ureter to expand beyond its limit, which causes pain and bleeding.

Is it okay to leave kidney stones untreated?

No, kidney stones should not be left untreated. They will eventually start to move in the urinary system and might get stuck in the ureter. This can be extremely painful, and you may require emergency treatment.

When do you need surgery for a kidney stone?

A kidney stone larger than 5 mm has a 40-60% chance that it will require surgical treatment. Typically, a stone of 7.5 mm size may pass with medical treatment. However, in some cases, the stone may get stuck in the urinary tract, and surgery will be required if-

  • The stone is very large and can’t move through the ureter properly.
  • You are experiencing consistent and unbearable pain.
  • The stone blocks the urine flow out of the kidney.
  • You have had urinary tract infections many times due to the stones.

Based on the size and location of the kidney stones, the doctor will recommend the most suitable treatment method to the patient.
