What Is Blastocyst Culture?

  • Ovarian stimulation: During each natural cycle in a healthy individual of reproductive age, a group of eggs matures each month. Normally, only one egg becomes mature enough to ovulate. In this step, you’ll take injectable hormone medicines to boost the entire group of that cycle’s eggs to mature simultaneously and completely. This means you may have many eggs instead of just one egg. The response of eggs to the medications is observed by ultrasounds and blood hormone levels. When your eggs are ready for final maturation (determined by the ultrasound and hormone levels), a trigger shot is given to the patient to complete the maturation of the eggs in preparation for egg retrieval.
  • Egg retrieval: The next step is egg retrieval. In this step, the healthcare provider utilizes an ultrasound to guide a thin needle into each ovary through the vagina. The needle is attached to a suction device used to pull the eggs out of each follicle. It is a simple procedure that takes no more than 30 minutes and is painless. 
  • Fertilization: The eggs are then fertilized in a laboratory with the male partner or donor sperm. This means that sperm will be injected into each mature egg.
  • Culturing embryos: The embryos produced after fertilization are cultured in the laboratory for several days (usually 5 or 6 days). This allows the embryos to develop to the blastocyst stage.
  • Selection of embryos: The embryologist chooses the healthiest blastocysts based on size, morphology, and viability for transfer. The other blastocysts are cryopreserved for later use, and only the healthiest ones are placed into the uterus.
  • Preparation of the uterine lining: Meanwhile, the recipient’s uterine lining is prepared through hormonal medicines to ensure it is in the best condition for implantation. 
  • Catheter insertion: An embryologist carefully inserts the healthiest blastocyst into the uterus once it has developed strong enough to withstand the uterine environment. A thin catheter is loaded with the selected blastocysts. The catheter is gently inserted through the cervix and into the uterus.
  • Transfer of blastocysts: The embryologist releases the blastocysts from the catheter into the uterine cavity. The number of blastocysts transferred depends on the patient’s age, medical history, and clinic policies, typically ranging from one to a few.
  • Pregnancy test: About 10 to 14 days after the blastocyst transfer, a blood test is performed to determine if the transfer was successful and pregnancy has occurred.
