Advanced Treatment for 5.5 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones are small deposits of minerals and salts that are commonly present in the urine. Depending on the composition and size, there are different treatment methods available for the kidney stones. For a 5.5 mm kidney stone, generally, surgical treatment isn’t required. It can be treated with medicines, healthy eating habits and enough water intake. However, in some cases, medical management may not be effective for their removal. Only then, lithotripsy or surgical removal is recommended. If you have been diagnosed with a 5.5 mm kidney stone, you can get in touch with Pristyn Care and consult our expert urologists regarding the treatment options.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

If you have kidney stones, you can consult your primary care provider or a urologist. They will recommend some tests to check the stone size and location. How can you prevent the formation of kidney stones?

Kidney stones can develop in people of all age groups due to various reasons. And once you’ve had one stone in one of the kidneys, there are chances that you will get more in the future.
Even if you get treatment for 5.5 mm kidney stones, you will have to make some lifestyle modifications to prevent the formation of the stones again. These changes include-

  • Drink adequate water, at least 2.5 or 3 liters a day.
  • Start drinking coconut water to eliminate the stones easily.
  • Include fruit juices in your diet plan, such as cranberry juice, apple juice, orange juice, and lime water to prevent the stones from forming in the first place.
  • Keep your oxalate consumption as minimum as possible. It means avoid eating foods like cashews, soy products, tea, chocolate, spinach, etc. which contain oxalate in rich amounts.
  • All dairy products, including milk, cheese, butter, ghee, etc. have high amounts of calcium which can increase your risk of getting kidney stones. So, make sure that you keep the intake limited.
  • Seafoods, such as herrings, sardines, tuna, etc. should also be avoided as they are rich in purine which can lead to formation of uric stones.
  • Limit your protein intake, including eggs, fish, meat, etc. as they increase the acid content in the urine, increasing the risk of developing kidney stones.

These tips will help you to a great extent. But if you get kidney stones even after following a proper diet, you should see an expert urologist and consult them to get proper treatment for kidney stones.
