A kidney stone is said to be large when it measures up to 5 mm or larger. Hence, a 9 mm kidney stone is considered large.
It will be difficult for you to pass a kidney stone which is 9 mm in size. It may or may not be able to move through the urinary tract. In 50% of cases, it is likely to get stuck which will cause excruciating pain and other symptoms as well.
A 9 mm stone is less likely to be dissolved with medicines. However, holmium laser or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy can be used to break the kidney stones in small pieces. Then, the stones can be passed through urine.
In 50% of patients who have 9 mm kidney stones, surgical treatment is usually required. The most effective treatment for them is extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), which is a non-invasive procedure. This method involves using high-energy shock waves to break the stones and expel them through the urinary tract. If it doesn’t work, then surgical treatment is considered.
