Advanced Treatment for 9.5 mm Kidney Stone

Kidney stones, also called nephrolith or renal calculi, is a very common problem associated with the urinary tract. They are hard mineral fragments that can form in the kidney, ureter, bladder, or urethra. Typically, minute kidney stones pass through the urinary tract and get expelled in urine without any intervention. However, in some cases, the stones can grow up to 9.5 mm. A kidney stone of 9.5 mm cannot be expelled naturally, due to which, proper treatment is required. If you are diagnosed with a kidney stone of 9.5 mm size, you can contact Pristyn Care and consult our urology experts. Our doctors will analyze your condition thoroughly and customize the treatment plan according to your needs.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Surgery

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is performed to remove kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • In Ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to pass a 9.5 mm kidney stone?

When a kidney stone is 9.5 mm in size, there is a 50% chance that it will pass through the urinary tract. If the stone is too large to pass naturally, either medicinal or surgical treatment is suggested to the patient.

Will I need surgery to get rid of 9.5 mm kidney stones?

No, for removal of 9.5 mm kidney stones, shockwave lithotripsy is performed. It is a non-invasive procedure that involves using high-energy shock waves to break the stones so that they can pass through the urinary tract.

Does it hurt to pass a kidney stone?

Yes, if the stone is larger than 5 mm, it is most likely to hurt if it moves through the urinary tract. The passing typically takes around 1 or 2 days for which, the doctor will recommend NSAIDs for pain management.

What will happen if a 9.5 mm kidney stone gets stuck?

If a stone of 9.5 mm gets stuck in the ureter, it will restrict the flow of urine which results in swelling in the kidneys. The ureter will also spasm and you will have sharp pain below the ribs. If this happens, you will most likely need emergency treatment.

How much does a 9.5 mm kidney stone removal cost?

The removal of a 9.5 mm kidney stone costs around Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 55,000 approximately. The cost varies for each patient depending on a variety of factors, such as technique used, doctor’s fee, hospitalization, diagnostics, etc.

  • Severe pain or burning sensations while passing urine
  • Frequent and urgent need to urinate
  • Presence of blood in the urine
  • Foul smell and cloudy color of the urine

  • Fever and chills, if an infection is present in the urinary tract
  • Nausea and vomiting

If you notice any of these symptoms, you should hurry up to see a urology expert and get proper treatment.
