Causes

According to various research and studies, lipomas are more common in the areas of skin regions that may have experienced significant physical stress. Genetic factors are another significant cause that may lead to the development of lipoma.

A defective gene that might lead to the development of one or more lipomas can be inherited from one’s parents. The term “familial multiple lipomatosis” refers to a rare disorder that may be caused by hereditary reasons.

Additionally, it has been noted that individuals with specific medical problems mentioned below are more likely to develop lipomas, including:

• Gardner’s syndrome
• Cowden syndrome
• Madelung’s illness
• Adiposis dolorosa

Diagnosis

A physical examination is typically the first step in diagnosing lipomas on the arms. It is followed by imaging or tissue analysis if needed. 

• Clinical Examination

In order to determine the lump’s size, texture, and mobility, the doctor first performs a physical examination.

• Medical History

To understand more about the symptoms, the doctor may discuss a thorough medical history, including the family history of lipomas or other pertinent disorders.

• Imaging

In order to visualize the lipoma and determine its size, depth, and other characteristics, ultrasound is usually the first imaging diagnostic test done. For a more thorough examination, MRI or CT scans are done, particularly if a deeper or larger lipoma is detected.

• Fine-needle aspiration

Using a tiny needle for microscopic inspection, FNA is performed by removing cells from the lipoma. It is done to confirm whether the lump is benign or malignant.

• Biopsy 

It involves removing a small or complete portion of the lipoma for a definitive diagnosis of lipoma on the arms. 

• Observation

To track the changes in lipoma, the symptoms, and unusual features, the doctor may choose to observe your symptoms.
