Lipomas are round or oval-shaped lumps of fatty tissue. They can develop anywhere on the body, especially on the shoulders, back, or neck. They are benign tumors that develop beneath the skin, or subcutaneously. Lipomas can develop in people of any age or gender. Several studies have indicated that at least 1% of people have at least one type of lipoma.
Around 13% of the lipomas are located in the neck. From small to very large, they can vary in size.Â
Lipomas on the neck, like lipomas on other parts of the body, have a rounded shape and are soft to the touch. They are not attached to deep parts of the skin, but are more superficial. That is why they move under our skin when we touch them.
Similar to lipomas on other parts of the body, lipomas on the neck are rounded in shape and are soft to the touch. They are more superficial and are not linked to the deep areas of the skin. Because of this, they move beneath our skin when we touch them.

Various causes or risk factors that can lead to the development of lipoma on the neck are given below.Â
It is the most common cause behind the development of lipomas or lipomatosis. You are very likely to develop lipomas if your parent or any other direct relative has struggled with this condition.
Several studies have concluded that individuals with excessive weight gain or obesity are more prone to developing fatty tissue lumps.
Although women are more likely to develop lipomas, they can appear in both men and women. This is because women can accumulate more fat, particularly in areas such as the thighs, breasts, or abdomen.
Certain medical conditions, such as liver diseases or issues with controlling blood sugar, are risk factors for developing lipoma on the neck.Â
The doctor conducts a detailed discussion with the patient to understand the medical history of the patient.
During a physical examination, your doctor will touch the lipoma in order to evaluate whether it’s painful or tender or not.Â
To confirm that the lipoma is not cancer, the doctor may suggest a biopsy. During a biopsy, your doctor removes a tiny sample of the lipoma tissue and sends it to a laboratory for testing. Biopsy is the most common diagnostic procedure for lipoma.
To have a clear picture of the lump, your doctor may suggest an imaging test, such as an ultrasound, MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) test, or a CT(computer topography) scan. These will help the doctor determine whether it’s a lipoma or cyst. Imaging tests also help to identify the location of the lipoma. It also helps to determine whether it has blood vessels and is pressing against nerves or not.Â
Generally, lipomas are asymptomatic and do not require treatment. But when they begin to grow larger and cause discomfort, they require proper treatment. Your doctor may advise the removal or surgery when there is severe pain or you notice the following neck lipoma symptoms.

The doctor will recommend the removal or a surgery if lipoma on the neck has begun to cause discomfort and pain to the patient. Although there are several ways to treat the lipoma, the best way is surgery, which prevents recurrence.Â
It uses a large syringe and a needle to remove the lipoma. Liposuction is an excellent method to remove lipoma if they have grown 4 cm or larger in size. It is an outpatient procedure performed under local/general anesthesia, depending upon the patient’s condition.Â
Neck lipoma surgery intends to remove the lipoma completely and also prevent its recurrence. Due to the high success rate of lipoma neck surgery, it is the most demanded treatment method for lipoma on the neck. The procedure is minimally invasive and causes minimal scarring.
These injections dissolve the fat cells within the tumor. Sodium deoxycholate is sometimes mixed with phosphatidylcholine in the solution that gradually reduces the size of the lipoma.Â
Steroids, along with isoproterenol, a beta-2 adrenergic agonist, are injected into the lipoma. The combination reduces the inflammation and promotes the breakdown of fats, consequently leading to the shrinkage of the lipoma.
Most lipomas on back of neck do not cause problems, and treatment is not essential. However, if it is growing rapidly and has begun to cause discomfort, you can get it removed surgically. The lipoma treatment procedures are safe and effective, and usually you can go home the same day.
The lipoma neck pain treatment is required when they begin to grow rapidly, exerting pressure on the nearby tissues and structures. A few possible lipoma surgery complications include infection, pain, bleeding, scarring, etc.Â
Lipomas on the nape of neck are non-cancerous fatty tumors on your neck. They are soft, movable lumps and are mostly painless. When they begin to cause discomfort, they can be removed through liposuction or surgical excision.
Lipomas are usually non-cancerous, harmless growths of fatty tissue. However, they can cause problems if they are very large and compress a nearby nerve. For more information, consult the experts at Pristyn Care.
