Advanced Treatment for 15 mm Kidney Stone

A 15 mm kidney stone is considered large and, in most cases, cannot pass naturally through urine. If you’re wondering whether surgery is required—the answer is yes, most patients with a 15 mm stone need medical or surgical intervention to safely remove it and prevent complications like severe pain, urine blockage, or kidney damage. Modern treatments are minimally invasive, highly effective, and offer quick recovery. Healthcare providers like Pristyn Care specialize in advanced procedures such as laser lithotripsy and PCNL, providing same-day discharge, experienced urologists, and end-to-end care, making the treatment process smoother and less stressful for patients.

Kidney Stone Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

If you have symptoms of a kidney stone, your urologist may perform the following diagnostic tests to confirm the presence of kidney stones and draft a treatment plan:

  • Blood and urine tests: Blood tests help assess the calcium and uric acid levels in the blood, which helps evaluate the health of the kidneys. A 24-hour urine collection test examines the components of the urine for stone-forming minerals and stone-preventing substances.
  • Imaging tests: Imaging tests like CT scans, abdominal X-rays, and ultrasounds help reveal the size and location of kidney stones.
  • Stone analysis: Often, large kidney stones are associated with small kidney stones. If you collect your urine and pass it through a strainer, you can obtain small renal stones and send them to the lab for analysis.

Treatment

For a kidney stone, you may need one of the following treatments:

  • ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a common noninvasive treatment in which shock waves like X-rays or ultrasounds are used to break down stones in the urinary system, pancreas, or bile ducts.
  • RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) is an endoscopic surgery in which the surgeon uses a fiberoptic endoscope and a ureteroscope to locate and remove renal stones from kidneys or ureters.
  • PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is performed to remove a kidney or upper ureter stones that are too large to be dissolved through ESWL or URSL.
  • URSL (Ureteroscopic lithotripsy), the surgeon inserts a ureteroscope through the urethra to locate the stones, and then the stones are destroyed using shock waves. A urethral stent may be placed at the end of the surgery to keep the ureter open after the procedure.

FAQs Around 15mm Kidney Stone Treatment

Does a 15 mm kidney stone need surgery?

In nearly all cases, yes. A 15 mm stone is far too large to pass on its own. Because of its size, it poses a high risk of completely blocking your urinary tract, which can cause severe pain, kidney infection, or permanent organ damage. While “surgery” for kidney stones rarely means a traditional open operation, a minimally invasive medical procedure will be required to break up or extract the stone.

Can you pass a 15 mm kidney stone naturally?

No, you won’t be able to pass a 15 mm kidney stone naturally. The ureter cannot expand beyond 5 mm. Thus, you are likely to need medicine or surgical treatment to get rid of the stones.

What is the best treatment method for a 15 mm kidney stone?

The best treatment method for removal of a 15 mm kidney stone is chosen after finding out its size and location. If the stone is in either of the kidneys, the doctor may recommend shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) for the removal. However, if the stone has moved, surgical techniques, i.e., ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), or retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) will be recommended.

What size kidney stone requires surgery?

As a general medical rule, any kidney stone that is 10 mm (1 centimeter) or larger almost always requires surgical or procedural intervention.

  • Stones under 5 mm: Have an 80% or greater chance of passing naturally with hydration and pain management.

  • Stones between 5 mm and 9 mm: Have a roughly 50% chance of passing, often requiring “medical expulsive therapy” (like alpha-blockers to relax the ureter).

  • Stones 10 mm and larger: Rarely fit through the 3 to 4 mm ureter and require intervention to protect the kidney.

How long does 15 mm kidney stone removal take?

The removal procedure typically takes 1 to 2 hours. The exact duration depends on the density of your stone and the approach your urologist uses:

  • Ureteroscopy (URS): Takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. A laser is used to pulverize the stone into dust. This is typically an outpatient procedure (you go home the same day).

  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Because the stone is accessed directly through a tiny incision in your back, it allows the surgeon to vacuum out large 15 mm pieces rapidly, though it may require a brief hospital stay.

Can I dissolve a 15 mm kidney stone with medication?

Generally, no.

  • Most 15 mm stones cannot be dissolved with medicines alone
  • Certain uric acid stones may respond to medications, but this is not common and takes time

For the majority of cases, procedural treatment is the safest and most effective option.

What are the warning signs that you need kidney stone treatment

When kidney stones form, they start to exhibit symptoms that are commonly mistaken for other problems. Here are some early warning signs that indicate that you might have kidney stones-

  • You feel nauseous frequently without any specific reason.
  • Backaches have become a common thing for you. The pain comes in waves and its intensity fluctuates.
  • The color of the urine is pink, brown, or red. Even the smell is foul and it seems cloudy.
  • You feel a frequent urge to urinate but urine comes out in small amounts.
  • If an infection has occurred in your body due to kidney stones, you will get fever and chills randomly.

If any or all of the above symptoms are present in your case, it is time that you see a doctor as soon as possible. You can contact us and schedule your consultation for free.
