Should I Opt for Gynecomastia Surgery?

An individual suffering from any stage of the gynecomastia should consider surgery as an effective treatment option. Furthermore, surgery offers far more promising results.

Gynecomastia develops in the following four stages-

  • Grade I- This is the first stage of gynecomastia. Some of the symptoms of this stage are tissue growth around the areola, puffiness around the nipples, discoloration of breasts.
  • Grade II- This is considered as mild to moderate breast enlargement. The symptoms are firmness around the nipples, softness and the fattiness in the outer area and tightness of the chest.
  • Grade III- People with grade III experience excess skin around the area, increase in chest width and sagginess of the breasts.
  • Grade IV- This is the most severe stage of gynecomastia. In this stage, the sagginess becomes apparent over the shirts also. The male breasts become like feminine.

Preparing For Gynecomastia Surgery

During the diagnosis and physical examination, it is crucial for the patient to discuss it freely with the doctor. In other words, the patient should answer the doctor’s questions related to health, lifestyle and habits with complete honesty.

Once the surgery is scheduled, prepare for the same as prescribed by the doctor. If your job requires you to perform strenuous activities, take leave at least for 15 days. Or else, you need to take two days off from the job. Ask someone to drive you home after the surgery.

Preparation is an integral part of surgery similar to recovery. A well-prepared patient is likely to achieve more desired results than someone who is not. Also, it minimizes the risk of any complications. Here’s how one has to prepare-

  • Need to get lab tested and go through all the necessary diagnostic tests
  • Quit smoking prior to two weeks before the surgery
  • Don’t drink any alcohol for at least 1 week before the surgery
  • Restrict taking blood thinners such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs as well as supplements to reduce the risk of excessive blood loss
  • After speaking with the doctor, adjust taking medications accordingly

Procedure of Gynecomastia Surgery

After proper diagnosis, the doctor suggests undergoing liposuction along with gland excision surgery to treat gynecomastia permanently.

The liposuction techniques includes the following steps-

  • First, the anesthetist administers anesthesia to make the patient unconscious
  • After making several incisions, a mixture of saline solution is injected into the fatty area
  • Then, the doctor inserts a cannula through which an ultrasound emitter is inserted. After this, the doctor emits ultrasonic waves to loosen up the fat
  • The loosened fat is sucked out through the tube
  • Lastly, the doctor closes the incisions

In the gland excision surgery, the following steps are included-

  • First, the anesthetist administers anesthesia to make the patient unconscious
  • The doctor makes several incisions after this around the breast
  • After this, the surgeon takes out the excess tissue around the breasts from the nipple area
  • Lastly, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures or dissolvable glue

Risks of Gynecomastia Surgery

Similar to any other surgery, there can be some side effects with gynecomastia surgery too. Although in rare cases, people do experience these complications. These risks are likely to subside within two days with proper instructions.

Some of the risks that occur after gynecomastia surgery are-

  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Collection of fluid
  • Looseness of breast skin
  • Inverted nipples
  • Enlargement of chest

A well-experienced gynecomastia surgeon will ensure that the chances of risks and complications reduce as minimum as possible.

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery

Throughout the recovery period, the patient has to wear a compression garment round the clock. Remember, there can be no exceptions to this. Otherwise, the results are as expected and the risk of complications high.

Generally, the whole recovery takes almost 4 to 6 weeks to complete. However, the duration can vary on the basis of the patient’s immunity and the extent of the tissue removed. Here’s what to expect during the recovery-

  • Day 1- It is normal to feel drowsy on the first day of the recovery. Also, the pain starts once the anesthesia effects wear off.
  • Day 2 and 3- The pain and swelling are maximum on both these days. However, taking pain medication and wearing the compression garment can reduce the swelling and soreness completely. Additionally, it is safe to resume daily activities on this day too.
  • Week 1- By the end of the first week, the patient should neither feel any pain nor any swelling.
  • After 21 days- The compression garment comes off. Also, the patient is able to feel normal by now. The results are evident by now.

Are The Results of Gynecomastia Surgery Permanent?

The results of both gynecomastia surgical procedures- liposuction and gland excision surgery- are permanent in nature. However, if a patient continues to lead a sedentary lifestyle along with continuing with their unhealthy habits, they are likely to develop gynecomastia again. Therefore, our doctors recommend following a healthy lifestyle even after the surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence.
