What is Stapedectomy?

The modern procedure, stapedectomy, is needed to cure if a patient is suffering from hearing loss. It is also called hearing loss surgery. Stapedectomy is the surgical procedure to remove all or a part of the original stapes bone to treat hearing loss. People suffering from hearing loss caused due to otosclerosis are prescribed to undergo Stapedectomy. It happens when the bone in the ear keeps grows keeping the stapes from moving normally.

Diagnosis

An ENT doctor or surgeon or healthcare provider who specializes in hearing can diagnose hearing loss or otosclerosis. The doctor may conduct hearing tests that measure hearing sensitivity and middle-ear sound conduction. Sometimes, imaging tests such as a CT scan are also used to diagnose otosclerosis. A patient will need a stapedectomy if he has otosclerosis.

Surgery

Hearing aids and antibiotics may also patients suffering from conductive deafness if they want to avoid the surgical procedure. However, medications are only a temporary solution. For a better and long-term cure, a surgeon can remove the unusual growth on bone and insert a tiny implant. For cases where the condition is severe, the entire stapes bone is taken out and replaced with a small prosthesis. This procedure is called a Stapedectomy.
