Tonsil
Tonsils are two masses of tissues, also known as lymph nodes, situated at the back of your throat. They filter out the germs and prevent them from entering your body. Tonsils produce antibodies to fight infections. They are your body’s first line of defense against illness. They produce white blood cells that combat viruses and bacteria entering your body through your mouth. However, they sometimes themselves become infected. The viruses and bacteria that attack them cause swelling and inflammation resulting in tonsillitis. The condition is common, especially among preschoolers, and can recur frequently or occur occasionally.
Adenoid
Adenoids, like tonsils, are composed of lymph nodes that prevent germs from entering the airways. Adenoids are situated in the space present above the nasopharynx. Adenoids also produce antibodies to help the body in fighting infections. Whenever adenoids catch an infection, they get enlarged or inflamed, this condition is called adenoiditis. It results in difficulty in breathing and makes the body more prone to frequent respiratory infections. Usually, the ENT Paediatric specialists recommend antibiotics to treat adenoiditis. However, if the affected area has frequent infections including sinus and ear infections, or breathing problems, surgery may be required to remove the adenoids. Kids are more prone to this infection as they tend to get careless about their eating and hygiene habits.
Rhinitis
Rhinitis is the swelling and inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. Children often face complications like stuffiness and runny nose and usually caused by a seasonal allergy or a common cold. Rhinitis is usually the result of a viral infection. However, children are usually prescribed allergy shots for precaution by Paediatrics. The symptoms of Rhinitis include sneezing, stuffiness, and runny nose and its diagnosis are essentially based on the symptoms.
Sinus
The sinuses are a connected system of hollow cavities (filled with air) in the skull. They are lined with pink, soft tissue called mucosa and are empty except for a thin layer of mucus. Sinusitis occurs when the soft tissue lining becomes inflamed. Healthy sinuses are hollow, but when infected, the fluid blocks the sinuses and it is called sinusitis. Sinusitis should be treated at an early stage only. When this problem is not attended on time in children, it leads to several serious complications including issues with vision and even neurological disorders (in severe cases) in your children.
